Our Purpose and Mission
Purpose
The American Wine Society (AWS) was organized in 1967
as a non-profit, educational, consumer oriented organization for those interested in learning more about all aspects of wine.
About 200 people attended the initial meeting which was held in Hammondsport,
New York. Today, AWS has nearly 5,000 members
in the United States, Canada and 11 other countries--wine lovers from all walks of life.
Membership in the national AWS organization is mandatory for any chapter membership. Membership benefits include: quarterly issues of the AWS Journal and Newsletter, AWS vintage charts, education manuals on wine making and grape growing,
books and special publication offers, attendance at chapter and regional meetings, attendance at the AWS National Conference, and AWS liability insurance for AWS
sponsored events.
Contact the Tucson Chapter for information about national membership or go directly to the National
web page at http://www.americanwinesociety.com
Mission
Our mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of wine through education. We also encourage moderate
consumption of wine and promote the health benefits of moderate consumption.

History of the Tucson Chapter
The Tucson Chapter
of the American Wine Society was organized in the Fall of 2003 by a small group of wine enthusiasts with the goal of
encouraging other Arizona residents to enjoy and learn more about wine.
The chapter has grown
from a few charter members to over 40 enthusiasts! This is a testimony to the appreciation
that Tucsonans have for wine!
We look forward to learning
about wine, having fun and enjoying each other's company in 2007.

Raleigh are fascinated about the variety of wine tastes. Sandy "volunteered" Kirk for office to
make sure they attended all the meetings!
Kendall Head Historian
Kendall also works for Raytheon in Tucson. He and his wife, Carla, are very fond of California Central Coast
Vinyards and make several trips there each year to tour the wineries. They have a very extensive collection in their
cellar which was hand crafted by Kendall.
Karen Kamp Public Relations
Karen is originally from Chicago, but has lived in SE Arizona for more than 20 years and in Tucson since 1999. Her love
of great food and wine led her to join the Tucson chapter of AWS, where she has learned about and enjoyed a broad variety
of wines. But for her, the best thing about being part of the Tucson AWS chapter has been the friendship of the upbeat, fun-loving,
and very wine-knowledgeable members.
